Due to the current geopolitical situation, the German government is not in a position to say with certainty whether participation in international police missions can be maintained to the same extent in the future. In a briefing shortly before Christmas, it announced that due to the current situation in the UN Security Council, the establishment of such individual deployments as part of United Nations peacekeeping missions could not be maintained.
“In addition, the work of the missions is becoming increasingly difficult, especially due to increasingly authoritarian and often strongly militarised governments in the countries of deployment,” the briefing states. Deployments of police experts within the EU are also at risk, as their expertise is needed in German departments. This applies in particular to missions lasting 12 months or longer. “It is therefore necessary to find new approaches to deployment,” the government said.
